Su construcción se enmarcó en el llamado Plan Centenario para renovar la flota, que incluía a seis grandes destructores o conductores de flotilla, encargados en Inglaterra de éstos, sólo el Almirante Lynch y el Almirante Condell alcanzaron a llegar a Chile antes del estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en 1914. Fueron construidos en los astilleros de White, Cowes, Southampton, en Inglaterra, su alistamiento terminó en 1913 y llegaron a Chile en abril de 1914. Desplazaban 1.430 toneladas, tenían un sistema propulsor de cinco turbinas que les permitían alcanzar una velocidad máxima de 31.5 nudos, y su armamento estaba constituido por 6 cañones de 4 pulgadas (102mm), dos ametralladoras y seis tubos lanzatorpedos de 18” (457mm). Pertenecieron a la generación de destructores llamados flush deck o cubierta corrida por el diseño de su casco. Ambas unidades tuvieron una intensa actividad de patrullaje en resguardo de la neutralidad nacional durante la mencionada Guerra de 1914, y posteriormente formaron parte activa de la Escuadra.
