Este oficial es considerado el “Padre de la Hidrografía Nacional” por su sobresaliente y fructífero trabajo en esta especialidad. Como joven oficial participó en campañas hidrográficas no sólo a lo largo de la costa nacional, sino también en exploraciones fluviales y lacustres. De ellas y como de temas afines, realizó numerosas publicaciones monográficas, incursionando también en la astronomía. Fue el primer Director de la Oficina Hidrográfica (actual Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada, SHOA), creada en 1874, mismo año en que empezó a publicarse el Anuario Hidrográfico, del que también fue artífice. En años posteriores a la Guerra del Pacífico fue comisionado por el Gobierno a encuentros científicos en Europa y los Estados Unidos. Permaneció a cargo de la Oficina Hidrográfica hasta la Guerra Civil de 1891, tras la cual fue separado del servicio por haber permanecido leal al Presidente Balmaceda. Este buque se había incorporado a la Escuadra Alemana del Asia Oriental (Ostasiengeschwader) del vicealmirante Maximilian Graf von Spee, poco después del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tras la derrota de ésta en la batalla de Malvinas del 8 de diciembre de 1914 frente a una escuadra británica, había buscado refugio en los canales australes chilenos. Su periplo continuó hasta el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, donde este crucero fue sorprendido en Bahía Cumberland, Isla de Más Afuera, por una fuerza británica muy superior, el 14 de marzo de 1915, y tras un corto combate su comandante decidió hundirlo. Tras ello, los sobrevivientes de SMS Dresden fueron llevados por unidades de la Armada de Chile primero a Valparaíso y posteriormente a Isla Quiriquina, donde permanecerían internados el resto de la guerra, en cumplimiento a las leyes de neutralidad. Title A name given to the resource Capitán de Navío Günther Lütjens, Comandante del crucero ligero alemán Karlsruhe Description An account of the resource Capitán de Navío (Kapitän zur See) Günther Lütjens, Comandante del crucero ligero alemán Karlsruhe, 1935. Lütjens (1889-1941) entró como cadete a la Marina Imperial alemana (Kaiserliche Marine) en 1907, y durante la Primera Guerra Mundial llegó a comandar una flotilla de torpederos en el frente de Flandes. Tras la guerra siguió sirviendo en la Marina de su país durante la República de Weimar (Reichsmarine) y luego en la Marina del III Reich (Kriegsmarine), pese a su distancia respecto del nacionalsocialismo. En 1933 se le da el mando del Crucero Ligero Karlsruhe, al mando del cual visita Chile en enero de 1935 en el curso de un viaje de instrucción, atravesando el estrecho de Magallanes y Canales Australes, con recaladas en Talcahuano y Valparaíso. Poco después de estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue ascendido a Vicealmirante (Vizeadmiral), comandando las fuerzas navales germanas en la invasión de Dinamarca y Noruega, en abril de 1940, siendo ascendido a Almirante (Admiral) en septiembre de dicho año. En enero de 1941 comandó la Operación Berlin, una incursión en aguas atlánticas al mando de los cruceros de batalla Scharnhorst y Gneisenau, y en mayo comandó una operación similar, con una división conformada por el acorazado Bismarck y el crucero pesado Prinz Eugen. Dicha incursión motivó una cacería de la flota británica, que finalizó con el hundimiento del Bismarck, el 27 de mayo de 1941. Lütjens murió a bordo, en el transcurso del combate. Esta fotografía forma parte de un álbum fue entregado al capitán Oelckers de la Armada de Chile en reconocimiento por su labor de práctico durante la travesía de dicho crucero por aguas australes chilenas, en particular la Angostura Inglesa. Junto a este retrato el Comandante Lütjens escribió una dedicatoria en alemán, cuya traducción Es la siguiente: “Álbum obsequiado al Señor Capitán de Corbeta Víctor Oelckers Stoecker por el Comandante y Oficiales del crucero “Karlsruhe”, con motivo de la travesía por los canales australes. 21.01.35”. A continuación se lee la dedicatoria de la donación por parte de los descendientes de dicho oficial chileno, fechada en 1992: “A la Armada de Chile, con todo el aprecio de los familiares del Vicealmirante Víctor Oelckers Stoecker.
