Este oficial tuvo un destacado servicio en la Armada en dos facetas principales, siendo una de ellas la hidrografía además de realizar levantamientos, es autor del libro Nuestros Hidrógrafos, de 1937, que contiene biografías de los principales especialistas de esta disciplina. La otra faceta en que destacó el Comandante Cordovez es en su interés y preocupación sobre la Antártica y la presencia que Chile debía tener en el Continente Helado. En 1939 cumplió un destacado papel en la comisión que asesoró al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores para establecer los límites del Territorio Antártico Chileno, lo que se concretó el 6 de noviembre de 1940. Este jefe naval nacido en Buenos Aires pero de nacionalidad chilena, se educó en dicha ciudad y luego en España, sirviendo en la Armada de este país durante la guerra contra Napoleón. Durante las campañas de la Independencia sirvió en las filas patriotas primero como oficial de artillería de Ejército y luego pasó a la Marina, encabezando la exitosa campaña inicial de la Primera Escuadra Nacional, en octubre de 1818. Luego sirvió a las órdenes del vicealmirante Thomas Cochrane y fue Presidente de la República por un breve lapso, en 1826. En 1837 encabezó la primera expedición de la Guerra contra la Confederación Perú-Boliviana, cuyo resultado fue el tratado de Paucarpata, que el gobierno de Chile rechazó. Entre 1847 y 1852 fue gobernador de Valparaíso, y entre 1853 y 1857 ministro de Chile en Francia, entre otros cargos públicos.
