Originalmente un mercante construido en 1911, de 6.650 toneladas y andar de 11 nudos, que se hallaba varado en Puerto Bueno. Ante la necesidad de contar con unidades auxiliares durante los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Armada decidió reacondicionarlo, ante lo cual se realizó una compleja y diestra maniobra de desvaramiento a cargo de los escampavías Galvarino y Cabrales, operación al mando del capitán de fragata Víctor Oelckers Storaker. Culminada exitosamente esta operación, se lo trasladó a Talcahuano para su refacción e instalación de un armamento de 2 cañones de 3 pulgadas y 8 ametralladoras de 20mm, además de dependencias para 30 guardiamarinas. Las obras estuvieron listas en 1945. Fue utilizado como transporte, buque escuela y en comisiones hidrográficas, y fue enajenado en 1957. Desplazaba 4.687 toneladas, daba 13 nudos, y fue adquirido junto con el Rancagua (ex Idaho) con motivo de las tensiones con Argentina. Pasadas éstas, ambos buques fueron arrendados a la Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores, y en 1907 fueron devueltos a la Armada. De la carrera del Maipo destacan dos extensos viajes comerciales realizados a los Estados Unidos en 1916. En 1926 fue declarado pontón y desguazado en 1929.
