Durante el temporal de dicha madrugada el Latorre garreó y estuvo a punto de colisionar con el Dique, lo que sólo se pudo evitar haciendo entrar al primero dentro de la poza del Puerto, maniobra que nunca antes se había intentado. Al momento de captarse esta imagen el Valparaíso II corre peligro de irse a pique, por lo cual un equipo dirigido por el Ingeniero Naval, Capitán de Fragata (R) Federico Corssen, realizó todo el esfuerzo posible para evitar su hundimiento, inyectando aire comprimido y sellando fugas, a fin de cumplir los requisitos necesarios para que respondiera la compañía de seguros. Sin perjuicio de lograr este objetivo, meses más tarde, el ingeniero Corssen demostró que era factible recuperar el Dique, faena que se realizó exitosamente el 16 de agosto de 1941. La Lautaro era originalmente un velero mercante con aparejo de barca construido en 1916 para la naviera alemana Laeisz y entrado en servicio en 1920 con el nombre de Priwall. En 1941, hallándose internado en Chile, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue cedido por el gobierno germano a la Armada de Chile, siendo utilizado como buque escuela y para transportar salitre hacia California, Estados Unidos. En el trágico incendio que se ilustra en esta imagen, ocurrido frente a la costa del Perú, perdieron la vida veinte de sus tripulantes finalmente, su casco no se pudo salvar, y zozobró el 8 de marzo.
