En este cuadro, obsequiado por el gobierno uruguayo, se aprecia el festivo recibimiento ofrecido a estos buques chilenos, el 2 de junio de 1903. Dichos cruceros realizaron una visita a Uruguay tras haber recalado en Buenos Aires en el mes de mayo, adhiriendo a las festividades patrias argentinas, en un momento de especial distensión y acercamiento entre ambos países. Manuel Larravide (1831-1910), fue un pintor uruguayo especializado en temas marítimos, y en esta obra ha pintado al crucero chileno Blanco Encalada en un lugar preponderante, hacia la izquierda de la imagen hacia la derecha se distingue, en un segundo plano, al crucero Chacabuco, y en el centro las cañoneras General Rivera y General Suárez de la Armada uruguaya. El momento pintado en esta tela es después que la primera, en persecución de la segunda, ha encallado y ha empezado a escorar notoriamente, y el buque chileno ha virado en redondo para atacarla con fuego de artillería y fusilería a corta distancia. Detalle centrado en la arboladura y parte del casco de la cañonera chilena, desde donde marineros y soldados de la guarnición hacen los últimos disparos de fusilería desde la cofa del trinquete, botes y banda de babor, mientras que la Independencia ha empezado a arriar su pabellón.
