El actual local de dicho plantel fue edificado entre 1957 y 1975, y entró en servicio en 1967, con el traslado desde su antigua sede, actual Museo Marítimo Nacional. La realización de esta sede fue fruto de un concurso, ganado por los arquitectos Mario Pérez de Arce y Hugo Errázuriz, al que después se incorporó un grupo de ocho profesionales de esta especialidad para la ejecución del proyecto.La Escuela Naval fue creada en 1818 como Academia de Jóvenes Guardiamarinas, y funcionó con intermitencias durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. En 1858 reabrió con el llamado Curso de los Héroes, entró en receso en 1876 y fue reabierta en 1881. Desde 1893 ocupó una nueva sede, donde actualmente funciona el Museo Marítimo Nacional, y en 1967 se trasladó a su sede actual. En 1945 pasa a denominarse oficialmente Escuela Naval Arturo Prat. Los orígenes de dicho establecimiento se remontan a 1868, cuando se creó con el nombre original de Escuela de Aprendices Marineros, denominación que le fue cambiada por la de Escuela de Grumetes en 1876. Tras la interrupción que significó la Guerra del Pacífico fue restablecida en 1887, y funcionó en las siguientes décadas a bordo de buques o pontones la mayor parte del tiempo.
