Los orígenes de dicho establecimiento se remontan a 1868, cuando se creó con el nombre original de Escuela de Aprendices Marineros, denominación que le fue cambiada por la de Escuela de Grumetes en 1876. Tras la interrupción que significó la Guerra del Pacífico fue restablecida en 1887, y funcionó en las siguientes décadas a bordo de buques o pontones la mayor parte del tiempo. Fue construido según planos del arquitecto Carlos von Moltke, entró en servicio en 1893 y entre 1927 y 1929 se le hicieron diversas ampliaciones. Dadas las nuevas necesidades propias de la Escuela Naval, como las derivadas del aumento de cadetes, el plantel se trasladó a una nueva sede en 1967. Posteriormente este edificio sirvió en forma sucesiva como sede de la Dirección de Abastecimiento y Contabilidad y Contraloría de la Armada la Escuela de Submarinos, Abastecimientos y Servicios y el Curso de Faros, este último hasta 1982. Al año siguiente comenzaron los trabajos para habilitarlo como Museo Naval y Marítimo, el que fue inaugurado en 1988 y sigue funcionando allí con el nombre de Museo Marítimo Nacional, a partir de 2011.
