Cursó sus estudios en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios y se incorporó a la Marina como aprendiz mecánico en 1867. Entre sus destinos estuvieron las corbetas O’Higgins, Esmeralda y Abtao y el blindado Almirante Cochrane, este último en 1876, a bordo del cual viajó a Inglaterra. Al estallar la Guerra del Pacífico pasó a la corbeta Esmeralda, y formó parte de su dotación para el Combate de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879, al mando del Comandante Arturo Prat, a quien conocía desde la infancia, y bajo las órdenes inmediatas del Ingeniero 1° Eduardo Hyatt. Obsequiado por la familia Bruner Baneire a la Escuela Naval de Chile, Valparaíso, 1947. La obra muestra al capitán Prat cuando, producido ya su abordaje, se halla en la cubierta del Huáscar y, tras dejar atrás la torre de artillería del blindado peruano, se encuentra cerca de la torrecilla de mando del comandante Grau, momento en que recibe una bala de fusil en la frente. En segundo plano se observa la Esmeralda, de la que el Huáscar acaba de separarse, con sus troneras por donde asoman sus piezas de artillería y los tripulantes que no han alcanzado a abordar al buque enemigo, que observan la muerte de su comandante.
