Desplazaba 6.210 toneladas, daba 13 nudos de andar y había sido construido en 1898. Fue adquirido en 1901, junto con el Maipo, con motivo de las tensiones limítrofes con Argentina. Pasadas éstas, ambos buques fueron arrendados a la Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores, y en 1907 fueron devueltos a la Armada. Prestó servicio hasta 1931, cuando fue desguazado. Aunque no era gemelo del Maipo, compartía con éste una capacidad de carga similar (7.000 toneladas) y un perfil caracterizado por cuatro mástiles dotados de plumas.
