Fue construido en los astilleros de Aalborg Waerft, Dinamarca, con su quilla puesta en grada en abril de 1940, y lanzado al agua al año siguiente. Su entrega a Chile fue demorada por la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en el curso de la cual este buque fue utilizado por los alemanes. En 1946, tras el fin de la contienda, fue entregado a la Armada. Desplazaba 3.800 toneladas y su andar era de 12 nudos. Su primera misión relevante fue el ser el buque insignia del comodoro Federico Guesalaga Toro en la Primera Expedición Antártica, en enero de 1947. En 1956 fue enviado a Hamburgo, Alemania, para modernizar sus calderas con el fin de quemar petróleo en vez de carbón. Fue dado de baja en 1967. Fotografía original de la época, década de 1950. Imagen tomada durante su etapa de terminación La artillería principal de este buque constaba de 4 piezas de 10 pulgadas (254mm) dispuestas en dos torres dobles, a proa y a popa. Nótense también las piezas ligeras de tiro rápido. Este buque, junto a su gemelo, el Constitución, fueron encargados para reforzar la Escuadra durante el período de tensiones con Argentina. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión de los Pactos de Mayo, y su compromiso de limitación de armamentos, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos Gran Bretaña, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph.
