Esta unidad en construcción para Chile, aún estaba inconclusa en 1914, cuando estalló la Primera Guerra Mundial y fue adquirida por el gobierno británico ante la necesidad de engrosar su flota. Con el nombre de HMS Canada tomó parte activa en el conflicto, y tras el final de éste fue readquirida por Chile, devolviéndosele su nombre de Almirante Latorre. La fotografía fue captada el 1 de agosto de 1920, mismo día que el buque fue traspasado a Chile. En la leyenda explicativa de esta postal se destaca la presencia del contralmirante chileno Luis (escrito Louise) Gómez Carreño, el capitán de navío británico George Napier Tomlin y el capitán de navío Braulio Bahamondes. El contralmirante Gómez Carreño era Comandante en Jefe de la Escuadra de buques nuevos adquiridos o readquiridos al Reino Unido, que además del acorazado comprendía tres destructores y un remolcador de alta mar y había izado su insignia a bordo del Latorre. El capitán de navío Bahamonde era el comandante del mismo, y el capitán de navío Tomlin lo había comandado durante la Guerra como HMS Canada, y después fue designado oficial de garantía. Tras el arribo a Chile, en 1921, Tomlin fue contratado por la Armada como director de la Academia de Guerra Naval, cargo en el que se desempeñó hasta 1923. Ésta fue originalmente la barca mercante alemana Priwall, destinada al comercio de salitre, que al estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial se hallaba en Chile y quedó internada. El gobierno germano la donó a Chile en mayo de 1941, siendo habilitada por la Armada como buque escuela. Entre 1941 y 1945 realizó diversos viajes de instrucción y también de transporte de salitre a California. El 28 de febrero de 1945, hallándose frente a las costas peruanas, se declaró un incendio a bordo, que significó la muerte de 20 de los integrantes de su dotación y la pérdida total del buque.
