Ex Winfried, ex Siam City, ex Gundulich, fue originalmente un mercante construido en 1911, de 6.650 toneladas y andar de 11 nudos, que se hallaba varado en Puerto Bueno. Ante la necesidad de contar con unidades auxiliares durante los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Armada decidió reacondicionarlo, para lo cual se realizó una compleja y diestra maniobra de desvaramiento a cargo de los escampavías Galvarino y Cabrales, operación al mando del capitán de fragata Víctor Oelckers Storaker. Culminada exitosamente esta operación, se lo trasladó a Talcahuano para su refacción e instalación de un armamento de 2 cañones de 3 pulgadas y 8 ametralladoras de 20mm, además de dependencias para 30 guardiamarinas. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. A fines de 1894 fue vendido nominalmente a Ecuador, pero el agente intermediario había orquestado una operación simulada, de manera tal que el verdadero adquirente fue el Japón, que en aquel momento se hallaba en plena guerra con China. Sin perjuicio que Chile recibiese su pago, ésta fue una operación simulada para burlar las leyes internacionales de la neutralidad. Como Idzumi, este crucero también pasó a la historia por ser el primer buque de la flota del almirante Togo en avistar a la flota rusa en las vísperas de la batalla naval de Tshushima o batalla del Mar del Japón, el 27 de mayo de 1905.
