Este buque se encargó con el fin de reemplazar a los antiguos petroleros Maipo y Rancagua, en servicio desde principios de la década de 1930. Su adquisición fue autorizada en 1952 y encomendada a los astilleros Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine Maritime, Le Trait, Rouen. Fue lanzado el 14 de enero de 1956, con gran ceremonia, y llegó a Chile el 22 de octubre de dicho año, siendo su primer comandante el capitán de navío Raúl Koegel Mertens. Desplazaba 17.500 toneladas, podía alcanzar los 14 nudos de andar y su armamento era de dos cañones de 4,7 pulgadas y seis ametralladoras de 20 mm. Desempeñó activamente el cometido de petrolero de escuadra para el que había sido concebido, siendo reforzado en 1966 con la llegada del Araucano. Fue dado de baja el 5 de julio de 1978.
