Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991. En efecto, el día 14, el crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden había sido sorprendido en la bahía Cumberland de dicha isla por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, y tras un breve cañoneo había sido hundido por sus propios tripulantes. El Esmeralda y el Zenteno recogieron a estos últimos y los trasladaron a Valparaíso con el fin de internarlos en Isla Quiriquina, siguiendo las leyes de la neutralidad. Estos buques eran cuatro: el Orella, el Riquelme, el Serrano y el Muñoz Gamero, y habían entrado en servicio en 1897. Desplazaban 311 toneladas, podían alcanzar los 30 nudos de velocidad, su armamento era de un cañón Armstrong de 12 libras de tiro rápido, cinco de 6 libras Hotchkiss y dos tubos lanzatorpedos. Eran prácticamente idénticos a los tres destructores clase Merino Jarpa. Nótense los diversos detalles de sus chimeneas y superestructuras, así como su dotación en cubierta.
