Title A name given to the resource Fragata Iquique, década de 1950 Description An account of the resource Fragata Iquique, vista de estribor. Fragata clase River, construida en Canadá, para la marina de dicho país. Junto a las corbetas clase Flower, estas fragatas se contaron entre las unidades ligeras producidas en mayor cantidad durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pensadas sobre todo para labores de escolta de convoyes y antisubmarina. Se construyeron 139 unidades en Gran Bretaña, Australia y Canadá, entre 1940 y 1944. Fueron pensadas como una mejora de las mencionadas corbetas, por ser más grandes y robustas, y por lo tanto, más aptas para las difíciles aguas del Mar del Norte y Atlántico, especialmente durante la prolongada campaña de desgaste contra los sumergibles alemanes. Esta característica también parecía hacerlas adecuadas para los difíciles mares del sur de Chile, donde predomina un clima análogo. Chile adquirió tres unidades de este tipo, bautizadas Esmeralda, Iquique y Covadonga. La Iquique ex H. M. C. S. Joliette, fue construida en los astilleros Morton Ltd., Québec, en 1943. Su desplazamiento era de 2.216 toneladas, su velocidad era de 20 nudos y requerían una tripulación de 140 hombres. Se entregaron desarmadas, su armamento fue instalado en Chile, y presentaba algunas diferencias respecto de su configuración original consistía en un cañón de 120mm (4,7 pulgadas), uno de 102 mm (4 pulgadas), 2 ametralladoras antiaéreas de de 40 mm. y 4 de 20 mm, 2 morteros y 2 deslizadores para cargas de profundidad. Posteriormente, se les agregó un lanzador de proyectiles antisubmarinos Hedgehog (Erizo). La Iquique izó el pabellón chileno el 21 de mayo de 1946, tras un viaje en flotilla con sus compañeras y el apoyo del buque madre de submarinos Araucano, llegaron a Valparaíso el 29 de junio. Sirvió integrando la Escuadra, y también por una misión especialmente recordada, como parte de la primera expedición a la Antártica, en enero de 1947. La Quidora formaba parte de una clase de cuatro lanchas torpederas, siendo sus gemelas la Guacolda, la Tegualda y la Fresia, construidas en los astilleros de la Empresa Nacional Bazán en Cádiz, España, en base a un diseño de la firma alemana Lürssen. El contrato por estas unidades fue firmado en 1962 y la Quidora (PTF-82) fue entregada el 28 de marzo de 1966, siendo embarcada a bordo del mercante alemán Stuttgart. Tras su entrega en servicio esta unidad, junto a sus gemelas, integraron la Flotilla de Torpederas, creada en 1967 con base en Puerto Williams, tocándoles una importante labor de resguardo de la soberanía nacional, especialmente en momentos de tensión con Argentina, como durante la crisis del Canal Beagle de 1978. En 1997 dicha flotilla fue disuelta y sus componentes pasaron a ser lanchas de servicios generales (LSG), retirándoseles sus tubos lanzatorpedos.
