Este buque se había incorporado a la Escuadra Alemana del Asia Oriental (Ostasiengeschwader) del vicealmirante Maximilian Graf von Spee, poco después del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tras la derrota de ésta en la batalla de Malvinas del 8 de diciembre de 1914 frente a una escuadra británica, había buscado refugio en los canales australes chilenos. Su periplo continuó hasta el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, donde este crucero fue sorprendido en Bahía Cumberland, Isla de Más Afuera, por una fuerza británica muy superior, el 14 de marzo de 1915, y tras un corto combate su comandante decidió hundirlo. Tras ello, los sobrevivientes de SMS Dresden fueron llevados por unidades de la Armada de Chile primero a Valparaíso y posteriormente a Isla Quiriquina, donde permanecerían internados el resto de la guerra, en cumplimiento a las leyes de neutralidad. Este tipo de buque tenía capacidad no sólo de llevar carga además, eran buques de alcance oceánico y podían liderar flotillas de barcazas, a la vez que llevar a bordo destacamentos de desembarco. Junto a éste (ex USS Zenobia), fue adquirido por Chile, en los Estados Unidos, un gemelo el Presidente Errázuriz (ex USS Xenia). Ambos fueron construidos en astilleros de Rhode Island, y Presidente Errázuriz había sido lanzado al agua en junio de 1943. Su desplazamiento era de 7.080 toneladas, un andar de 16 nudos y un armamento inicial de 2 cañones de 3 pulgadas y 12 ametralladoras de 20 mm, el que fue alterado en Chile, quedando con un cañón de 4.7 pulgadas, 2 de 3”, 8 ametralladoras de 40 mm. y 10 de 20 mm. Ellos también se contaron entre los primeros buques al servicio de la Armada de Chile que contaban con radares. Ambos buques izaron el pabellón nacional el 20 de diciembre de 1946 en Joint’s Port, Nueva York, y el Presidente Pinto arribó a Valparaíso el 19 de mayo de 1947. Una de sus primeras misiones de relevancia fue conducir al Presidente de la República, Gabriel González Videla, en un viaje a la Antártica, en febrero de 1948, siendo ésta la primera visita de un gobernante al continente helado. Luego, entre 1951 y 1955 sirvió como buque escuela, a falta de una unidad más adecuada, emprendiendo varios viajes de instrucción. También cabe mencionar su labor de auxilio a la zona de Chiloé, tras los terremotos de mayo de 1960. Fue dado de baja en 1968. Fotografía original de la época, década de 1950. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión que significaron los llamados Pactos de Mayo, y su compromiso de limitación de armamentos, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos a Gran Bretaña en 1903, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph.
