Fue construido en Escocia en 1906 y comprado por la Armada en 1909 a la Sociedad Ganadera de Magallanes. Desplazaba 820 toneladas, alcanzaba una velocidad de 10,6 nudos y se le armó con un cañón Hotchkiss de 37mm. En su hoja de servicios destacó sobre todo por tomar parte en numerosas campañas de levantamiento hidrográfico, en el litoral norte, centro y sur del país. En 1937 naufragó frente a la isla Mocha. Sus tripulaciones, habían llegado desde Chile a bordo del buque madre de submarinos Araucano, en el que izó su insignia el capitán de navío Gustavo Carvallo Gundelach, en su calidad de comodoro de la División de Transportes y Barcazas. Las seis LSM fueron bautizadas Aspirante Goycolea, Guardiamarina Contreras, Aspirante Isaza, y Aspirante Morel, y las seis LCI recibieron los nombres de Cabo Bustos, Eduardo Llanos, Grumete Díaz, Grumete Bolados, Grumete Téllez y Soldado Canave.
