Ésta se realizó en un marco de acercamiento y amistad tras el período de tensiones por diferencias de límites, superado momentáneamente por los llamados Pactos de Mayo de 1902. Dicha delegación chilena fue encabezada por el vicealmirante y ex Presidente de la República, Jorge Montt Álvarez, y se embarcó a bordo de los cruceros protegidos Blanco Encalada y Chacabuco, que permanecieron en Buenos Aires entre el 22 de mayo y el 6 de junio de 1903. La ilustración muestra uno de los momentos de fondear dichos buques, cuando a modo de saludo, se libera una multitud de palomas desde la cubierta del crucero Chacabuco. Fue construido por los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, fue lanzado al agua en 1898, y adquirido por Chile en 1901, como refuerzo de la Escuadra, durante un período de tensiones vecinales con Argentina. Fue uno de los buques de servicio más prolongado de la Escuadra chilena de principios del siglo XX, siendo objeto de una importante modernización en 1942. Ex USS Nashville, era de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Nashville entró en servicio en 1938 y tomó parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el frente del Pacífico. Junto con su gemelo el USS Brooklyn, rebautizado O’Higgins, fue adquirido por Chile en 1951. El crucero Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente. Este buque se había incorporado a la Escuadra Alemana del Asia Oriental (Ostasiengeschwader) del vicealmirante Maximilian Graf von Spee, poco después del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tras la derrota de ésta en la batalla de Malvinas del 8 de diciembre de 1914 frente a una escuadra británica, había buscado refugio en los canales australes chilenos. Su periplo continuó hasta el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, donde este crucero fue sorprendido en Bahía Cumberland, Isla de Más Afuera, por una fuerza británica muy superior, el 14 de marzo de 1915, y tras un corto combate su comandante decidió hundirlo. Tras ello, los sobrevivientes de SMS Dresden fueron llevados por unidades de la Armada de Chile primero a Valparaíso y posteriormente a Isla Quiriquina, donde permanecerían internados el resto de la guerra, en cumplimiento a las leyes de neutralidad. También se aprecia su pieza de artillería principal de 115 libras su pieza de 64 libras se hallaba hacia popa, fuera de la imagen. En dicho encuentro, el buque chileno enfrentó a la división naval peruana integrada por la corbeta Unión y la cañonera Pilcomayo, de poderío muy superior, logrando evitar ser capturada, y logrando disparos certeros sobre la primera.
