Originalmente construido en Astilleros de Cádiz S. A. con el nombre de Don Juan de Austria para la Armada Española y gemelo del Juan Sebastián Elcano, fue adquirido aún inconcluso por Chile, en 1952, fue lanzado al agua el 12 de mayo de 1953 y entregado el 15 de junio de 1954. Su primer crucero de instrucción lo realizó al año siguiente. Desplaza 3.673 toneladas, puede alcanzar los 17,5 nudos de andar y tiene aparejo de bergantín goleta, estando dotado además de un motor auxiliar.
