En 1949 se había organizado la primera compañía de infantería de marina (IM) en el seno del Cuerpo de Defensa de Costa, con el fin de destacarla a Punta Arenas, y en 1955 se dispuso que cada uno de los cuatro regimientos de dicho cuerpo tuviese una compañía IM.
