Durante su visita a Chile, estaba al mando del Capitán de Navío (Kapitän zur See) Günther Lütjens, y ella incluyó el paso de este buque por el estrecho de Magallanes y Canales Australes, y recaladas en Talcahuano y Valparaíso. En la travesía de dicha Angostura actuó como práctico el Capitán de Corbeta de la Armada de Chile Víctor Oelckers Stoecker. El crucero ligero Karlsruhe entró en servicio en 1927 y tenía otros dos gemelos, el Köln y el Köningsberg. Sirvió en la Marina de Guerra alemana (Kriegsmarine) en las primeras fases de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y fue hundido el 9 de abril de 1940 por un submarino británico, durante las operaciones de invasión a Noruega. Günther Lütjens, con el grado de Almirante (Admiral), comandó la división naval cuya insignia era el acorazado Bismarck que realizó una célebre campaña en el Atlántico, siendo objeto de una cacería por la flota británica, que lo hundió el 27 de mayo de 1941.
