Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991. Este buque, junto a su gemelo, el Constitución, fueron encargados durante el período de tensiones con Argentina de principios del siglo XX. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión de los Pactos de Mayo, y su compromiso de limitación de armamentos, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos Gran Bretaña en 1903, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph. Esta fuerza realizó una visita de cortesía con motivo de la transmisión del mando presidencial en Chile, ocasión en que Gabriel González Videla asumía la Presidencia de la República. Esta escuadra estaba compuesta por los cruceros Almirante Brown y 25 de Mayo, fondeados hacia el extremo del Molo de Abrigo, los destructores Juan de Garay, La Rioja, Tucumán, Mendoza, Cervantes, Buenos Aires y Entre Ríos y el patrullero Murature. A la misma ocasión también asistió una fuerza naval norteamericana. Fondeado a la gira, se halla el acorazado Almirante Latorre.
