El Constitución fue construidos en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras el acercamiento logrado con los llamados Pactos de Mayo de 1902 y su consiguiente compromiso de reducción de armamentos, ambos buques fueron vendidos a Gran Bretaña, siendo bautizado el Constitución HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad HMS Triumph. La Baquedano había sido construida en Inglaterra y entró en servicio en 1900, realizando viajes de instrucción hasta 1935 en 1936 quedó en Valparaíso, como buque ténder de la Escuela Naval, en 1939 fue destinada a sede de la Escuela de Pilotines y en 1959 fue dada de baja. Esta fotografía corresponde a los comienzos de su servicio en la Armada de Chile, puesto que este buque, junto a su gemelo el Almirante Cochrane, habían sido encargados a astilleros ingleses como parte del llamado Plan Centenario de renovación de la flota. El estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial había impedido su entrada en servicio, y tras el final de la misma, el Latorre fue readquirido por Chile. Se incorporó a la Escuadra en febrero de 1921.
