A fines de 1894 fue vendido nominalmente a Ecuador, pero el agente intermediario había orquestado una operación simulada, de manera tal que el verdadero adquirente fue el Japón, que en aquel momento se hallaba en plena guerra con China. Sin perjuicio que Chile recibiese su pago, ésta fue una operación simulada para burlar las leyes internacionales de la neutralidad. Como Idzumi, este crucero también pasó a la historia por ser el primer buque de la flota del almirante Togo en avistar a la flota rusa en las vísperas de la batalla naval de Tshushima o batalla del Mar del Japón, el 27 de mayo de 1905. Fue construido en los astilleros Bow McLachlan & Co. de Cowes, Escocia, lanzado al agua en 1929 y constituía clase junto a los Sobenes (1°), Colo Colo (4°), Galvarino (3°) y Janequeo (4°), todos los cuales entraron en servicio en 1931, siendo también denominados remolcadores de alta mar. Desplazaban 760 toneladas, daban una velocidad de 12 nudos y estaban armados con un cañón de 57mm. Tuvo una hoja de servicios de gran actividad, especialmente en las zonas Sur y Austral, incluyendo el reflotamiento del mercante Gundulich, en 1943 (después incorporado a la Armada como Magallanes), y en la extinción del incendio de la motonave Concepción, a la cuadra de Talcahuano. Ex USS LSM 400, era una barcaza tipo Landing Ship Medium (buque de desembarco mediano), construida en 1945 para la US Navy, con 1.095 toneladas de desplazamiento a plena carga, 12 nudos de velocidad y armamento de 4 ametralladoras de 20mm. Era similar a las otras cuatro barcazas tipo LSM que habían sido adquiridas en 1947: Aspirante Morel (1ª), Guardiamarina Contreras, Aspirante Goycolea, y Aspirante Isaza Fue cedida en préstamo renovable por el gobierno norteamericano, junto a otras doce barcazas de diverso tipo, con el fin que la Armada de Chile pudiese asistir a las localidades que habían sufrido las consecuencias de los terremotos del 21 y 22 de mayo de 1960.
