Ex Winfried, ex Siam City, ex Gundulich, fue originalmente un mercante construido en 1911, de 6.650 toneladas y andar de 11 nudos, que se hallaba varado en Puerto Bueno. Ante la necesidad de contar con unidades auxiliares durante los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Armada decidió reacondicionarlo, para lo cual se realizó una compleja y diestra maniobra de desvaramiento a cargo de los escampavías Galvarino y Cabrales, operación al mando del capitán de fragata Víctor Oelckers Storaker. Culminada exitosamente esta operación, se lo trasladó a Talcahuano para su refacción e instalación de un armamento de 2 cañones de 3 pulgadas y 8 ametralladoras de 20mm, además de dependencias para 30 guardiamarinas. Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991.
