Esta clase la constituía dicho buque junto con sus gemelos Orompello, Leucotón y Colo Colo (3°), y habían sido construidos en astilleros de Helsinki, Finlandia, en 1914, para Rusia. Fueron adquiridos por Alemania después de la Primera Guerra Mundial y, posteriorente readquiridos por Chile en 1920, siendo reacondicionados como minadores y barreminas en los astilleros de Samuel White & Co. en Cowes, Reino Unido. Desplazaban 540 toneladas, desarrollaban una velocidad de hasta 14,5 nudos y fueron armados con dos cañones de 3 pulgadas (76mm) de tiro rápido, además de una carga de minas que podían llevar, si se daba el caso.
