Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991.
