Title A name given to the resource Buque de exploración antártica estadounidense USS Bear Description An account of the resource Buque de exploración antártica USS Bear de la Armada de los Estados Unidos (US Navy), hacia 1940. Originalmente un buque para la pesca de focas construido en Escocia en 1874, fue adquirido por los Estados Unidos en 1884, y destinado a servicios de aduana marítima, luego a la Guardia Costera (US Coast Guard) y, en 1939, a la Armada de los Estados Unidos. Fue acondicionado para llevar un aeroplano de exploración a bordo, y tomó parte en expediciones antárticas comandadas por el célebre explorador, Contralmirante (Rear Admiral) Richard E. Byrd, entre 1939 y 1941. Posteriormente fue modificado, y durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial tomó parte en labores de patrulla en Groenlandia.
