La imagen corresponde a su última época antes de ser desguazado. Nótense las portas para las piezas de artillería de su reducto central de babor. Había sido encargado en 1872 los astilleros Earle´s Shipbuilding de Hull, Inglaterra, según los planos del diseñador naval sir Edward J.Reed, junto con su gemelo el Valparaíso (después rebautizado Blanco Encalada). Entró en servicio en diciembre de 1874, fue puesto en estado de alistamiento con motivo de la crisis con Argentina de 1878 y tuvo una participación activa y protagónica en la Guerra del Pacífico. Durante dicho conflicto, destacó especialmente en la Batalla Naval de Angamos del 8 de octubre de 1879 cuando, al mando del Capitán de Fragata Juan José Latorre Benavente, jugó un rol decisivo en la captura del ariete blindado o monitor peruano Huáscar. Tras la guerra fue sometido a una modernización en Inglaterra, que incluyó una renovación de su artillería. Tomó parte en la Guerra Civil de 1891, y en 1892 fue sede de la recién creada Escuela de Artillería (originalmente denominada Escuela de Condestables, Ayudantes de Condestables, Artilleros y Torpedistas de Preferencia), sirviendo en dicho rol durante dos décadas. En 1898 fue provisoriamente devuelto al servicio activo con motivo de una nueva crisis vecinal con Argentina. Las últimas décadas de su existencia permaneció en Talcahuano y fue enajenado en 1933. Vista de su banda de estribor. Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991.
