Esta unidad de la Armada de los Estados Unidos (US Navy) pertenecía a la clase Omaha, había entrado en servicio en 1924, y era el buque insignia de la Fuerza del Sudeste de la Flota del Pacífico, integrada también por 9 destructores. Tras la entrada de los Estados Unidos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, dicha fuerza patrulló la Costa Oeste de Centro y Sudamérica, realizando esta labor en coordinación con unidades de la Armada, después que Chile rompiera relaciones con las potencias del Eje, en enero de 1943. El “Prat” fue un componente fundamental del programa de renovación de la flota realizado por la administración del Presidente José Manuel Balmaceda. Fue encargado en 1888 a los astilleros Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranée de La Seyne-sur-Mer, Toulon y, debido a diversas demoras, incluyendo las debidas a la Guerra Civil de 1891, sólo entró en servicio en mayo de 1893. Desplazaba 6.900 toneladas, podía alcanzar los 18 nudos y su artillería era la siguiente: cuatro piezas Canet de 9 pulgadas (240mm), dispuestas en torres individuales ocho piezas Canet de 4”,7 (120mm) en cuatro torres dobles, cuatro Hotchkiss de 57mm,diez Hotchkiss de 37mm y dos tubos lanzatorpedos. Junto a la MOrel, navega el patrullero Lientur. Esta torpedera fue construida junto a otras tres unidades similares en España en astilleros Empresa Nacional de Construcciones Navales Militares S.A Bazán de Cádiz como lancha torpedera bajo el diseño Lürssen de la Clase Jaguar.El 12 de noviembre de 1963 se puso la quilla a la Guacolda y Fresia. Lanzada al agua el 25 de agosto de 1964 se entrega a Chile el 30 de julio de 1965 en España. Salió de Cádiz a bordo del mercante alemán "Stuttgart" el 25 de agosto de 1964, recalando a Chile el 21 de septiembre. Durante su vida como torpedera fue destinada al Distrito Naval Beagle. Su primer comandante fue el Tte.1º Jorge Martínez Busch. A contar el 26 de diciembre de 1997 pasa a desempeñarse como Lancha de Servicio General sirviendo en la zona norte del país. Desplazaba 134 toneladas y su armamento original consistía en 4 tubos lanza torpedos de 21”, dos ametralladoras simples Bofors de 40mm y dos ametralladoras de .50”. Era una de las seis tipo Viper construidas en los astilleros Yarrow de Poplar, Inglaterra, que entraron al servicio de la Armada en 1896. Esta clase también estaba constituida por las Cirujano Videla, Teniente Rodríguez, Capitán Thomson, Ingeniero Mutilla y Guardiamarina Contreras. La Hyatt y la Videla navegaron desde sus astilleros y las restantes cuatro llegaron embaladas y fueron ensambladas en Chile en 1899.
