Cuando la balsa se encontraba al oeste de isla de Juan Fernández. Sus precarias condiciones de flotabilidad lo obligaron a solicitar ayuda en forma radiotelegráfica a la Armada el 19 de mayo. Alertada la fragata Baquedano, fue segregada de la Escuadra y zarpó de urgencia y pese a las malas condiciones de mar logró hacer contacto con la balsa en la madrugada del 22 de mayo inicialmente la balsa fue remolcada, pero sus malas condiciones obligaron a de Bisschop y sus científicos a abandonarlas y cobijarse en la fragata salvando todo su instrumental y enseres personales de valor. Title A name given to the resource Contralmirante Luis Gómez Carreño Description An account of the resource Contralmirante Luis Gómez Carreño, hacia 1920. Este jefe naval nació en 1965 y a los 15 años se incorporó a la Marina como aspirante, participando en acciones tardías de la Guerra del Pacífico. En 1881 entró a la Escuela Naval a perfeccionar sus conocimientos y posteriormente tomó parte activa en la Guerra Civil de 1891 en el bando congresista, al mando de una batería de ametralladoras de desembarco que causó estragos en las filas gubernamentales, especialmente durante la batalla de Placilla. Es recordado por su enérgico carácter, manifestado en ocasiones como el Terremoto de 1906, cuando fue nombrado jefe de plaza de Valparaíso, y tomó estrictas medidas para mantener el orden y controlar los saqueos. A él se le confió la misión de traer desde los Estados Unidos los seis submarinos adquiridos para la Armada en 1918 y, más tarde, la nueva escuadra encabezada por el acorazado Almirante Latorre, que realizó el periplo de Inglaterra a Chile entre fines de 1920 y comienzos de 1921.
