Title A name given to the resource Barcaza Aspirante Morel en Valparaíso, década de 1950 Description An account of the resource Barcaza LSM Aspirante Morel fondeada en Valparaíso. Formaba parte de una flotilla de diez barcazas adquiridas en 1947 en los Estados Unidos, de las cuales cuatro eran LSM (Landing Ship Medium, buques de desembarco mediano). Habían sido construidas en 1944, desplazaban 1.095 toneladas, 15 nudos de andar y armamento de 4 ametralladoras de 20 mm podían vararse directamente en la costa, y tenían la característica de poder abrir dos portas en su proa por la que podían desembarcar tropas y vehículos, toda una novedad para la Armada chilena de la época. Las gemelas de la Aspirante Morel eran: Guardiamarina Contreras, Aspirante Goycolea, y Aspirante Isaza. Estas unidades fueron entregadas a Chile el 20 de marzo de 1947 junto a seis barcazas LCI Armada en una ceremonia realizada en la base de entrenamiento anfibio norteamericana de Little Creek, Norfolk. Sus tripulaciones, que se familiarizaron rápidamente con estas unidades, habían llegado desde Chile a bordo del buque madre de submarinos Araucano, en el que izó su insignia el capitán de navío Gustavo Carvallo Gundelach, en su calidad de comodoro de la División de Transportes y Barcazas. Esta flotilla arribó a Valparaíso el 10 de junio. En la práctica, estas barcazas fueron utilizadas principalmente en labores de transporte, trabajos hidrográficos y comunicaciones con zonas aisladas, especialmente en las zonas Sur y Austral.
