Title A name given to the resource Lancha torpedera Guacolda (4ª) en dique seco en Talcahuano después de haber sido descargada desde el buque mercante alemán Stuttgart Description An account of the resource Lancha torpedera Guacolda (4ª) en dique seco en Talcahuano después de haber sido descargada desde el buque mercante alemán Stuttgart, 27 de septiembre de 1965. La Guacolda formaba parte de una clase de cuatro lanchas torpederas, siendo sus gemelas la Tegualda, la Fresia y la Quidora, construidas en los astilleros de la Empresa Nacional Bazán en Cádiz, España, en base a un diseño de la firma alemana Lürssen. El contrato por estas unidades fue firmado en 1962 y la Guacolda (PTF-80) fue entregada el 30 de julio de 1965, siendo embarcada a bordo del mercante alemán Stuttgart. Tras su entrega en servicio esta unidad, junto a sus gemelas, integraron la Flotilla de Torpederas, creada en 1967 con base en Puerto Williams, tocándoles una importante labor de resguardo de la soberanía nacional, especialmente en momentos de tensión con Argentina, como durante la crisis del Canal Beagle de 1978. En 1997 dicha flotilla fue disuelta y sus componentes pasaron a ser lanchas de servicios generales (LSG), retirándoseles sus tubos lanzatorpedos. Fue el primer especialmente construido para este propósito que tuvo la Armada de Chile, y su adquisición se gestó junto a la compra de los tres sumergibles clase “O”, que entraron en servicio en 1930, y también con el propósito de servir también de buque insignia de esta flotilla. Fue construido en los astilleros Vickers Armstrong Ltd. en Barrow in Furness, Inglaterra, y fue lanzado al agua el 22 de Octubre de 1929. Desplazaba 6.500 toneladas, podía desarrollar 13 nudos de velocidad, y contaba con un armamento defensivo de dos piezas de 4.7 pulgadas, dos de 47 mm. y dos ametralladoras antiaéreas de 20 mm. Contaba con una maestranza general y otra especial para torpedos, donde podían hacerse las mismas recorridas que se hacían en el Subdepartamento de Torpedos de Talcahuano. Arribó a Valparaíso el 24 de junio de 1930. Tuvo un intenso uso en múltiples roles, además del original, y sirvió hasta el 1 de enero de 1959, cuando fue retirado del servicio activo. Fue dado de baja en marzo de 1962, y su casco fue enajenado a la Compañía de Acero del Pacífico (CAP), al año siguiente. Reproducción de una fotografía de la época, década de 1930. Un velero mercante cruza delante de un destructor tipo Laird. Chile adquirió cuatro buques de este tipo: Orella, Muñoz Gamero, Serrano y Riquelme. Fueron encargados a los astilleros Laird Brothers de Birkenhead en 1895 y entraron en servicio en 1897. Desplazaban 311 toneladas, podían alcanzar los 30 nudos de velocidad, y su armamento era de un cañón Armstrong de 12 libras de tiro rápido, cinco de 6 libras Hotchkiss y dos tubos lanzatorpedos. Este buque, junto a su gemelo, el Constitución, fueron encargados para reforzar la Escuadra durante el período de tensiones con Argentina. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión de los Pactos de Mayo, y su compromiso de limitación de armamentos, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos Gran Bretaña, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph.
