En efecto, el día 14, el crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden había sido sorprendido en la bahía Cumberland de dicha isla por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, y tras un breve cañoneo había sido hundido por sus propios tripulantes. El Esmeralda y el Zenteno recogieron a estos últimos y los trasladaron a Valparaíso con el fin de internarlos en Isla Quiriquina, siguiendo las leyes de la neutralidad.
