Ex USS Brooklyn, era cabeza de la clase homónima de nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy), y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Brooklyn entró en servicio en 1937 y tuvo una activa participación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el teatro de operaciones el Mediterráneo. Junto a su gemelo el USS Nashville fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951, y rebautizados O’Higgins y Prat, respectivamente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991. Constituía clase junto con el Blanco Encalada, y ambos habían sido encargados a los astilleros de Earle Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. de Hull, Reino Unido, para ser construidos según los planos del destacado diseñador naval Edward J. Reed. El Cochrane había entrado en servicio en diciembre de 1874 y el Blanco en enero de 1876 con el nombre original de Valparaíso, que le fue cambiado tras el fallecimiento del almirante Manuel Blanco Encalada. Éstos, los primeros buques blindados con que contó Chile, desplazaban 3.560 toneladas y teóricamente podían alcanzar los 13 nudos de velocidad. Su cintura acorazada tenía un máximo de 9 pulgadas, y su armamento estaba compuesto por seis piezas Armstrong de 250 libras, tres por banda, cuatro en caza y dos en retirada, situadas en un reducto central. El costado de babor de este reducto se observa claramente en esta imagen, tomada desde la popa del buque. También resalta el hecho que le ha sido retirada su arboladura con fines como economizar personal, disminuir la resistencia del viento y evitar daños si aquella era dañada en combate, Claras señales que esta fotografía fue captada durante las operaciones navales de 1879, y que en el curso de las cuales este buque se estaba valiendo exclusivamente de su propulsión de vapor.
