Ambos eran de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939, siendo sus nombres originales USS Brooklyn y USS Nashville, respectivamente. Ambos tomaron parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y mientras el primero participó en el teatro de operaciones del Mediterráneo, el segundo hizo otro tanto en el frente del Pacífico. Ambos fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951. El Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión de los Pactos de Mayo, y su compromiso de limitación de armamentos, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos Gran Bretaña, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph.
