Su construcción fue encargada en 1872, originalmente para el servicio de la colonia de Punta Arenas y zona austral. Desplazaba 950 toneladas, su velocidad máxima teórica era de 11,5 nudos y su armamento era una colisa (pieza giratoria) de 115 libras, en crujía, una de 64 y una de 20. Durante la primera fase de la Campaña Naval de la Guerra del Pacífico tuvo una destacada actuación bajo el mando del capitán de fragata Juan José Latorre, en especial en los combates de Chipana (12 de abril) y segundo de Iquique, la noche del 9 al 10 de julio de 1879. En la imagen resalta el hecho que le ha sido retirada su arboladura, salvo los palos machos, con fines como economizar personal, disminuir la resistencia del viento y evitar daños si aquella era dañada en combate, Claras señales que esta fotografía fue captada durante las operaciones navales de 1879, y que en el curso de las cuales este buque se estaba valiendo exclusivamente de su propulsión de vapor. Constituía clase con su gemelo, el Maipo (3°). Ambos fueron construidos en los astilleros Armstrong de Newcastle-on-Tyne su desplazamiento era de 8.225 toneladas, su velocidad era de 15 nudos y estaban armadas de dos piezas de 4,7 pulgadas (120mm) y dos ametralladoras. El Rancagua entró en servicio en 1930. Tanto esta unidad como su gemelo tuvieron una extensa e intensa hoja de servicios, con misiones tan relevantes para el país como viajes periódicos a buscar petróleo al puerto peruano de Talara, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial e inmediata postguerra, período en que este combustible era especialmente escaso. También hizo las veces de buque escuela, realizando viajes de instrucción en 1938, 1939, 1941, 1942 y 1948.
