Title A name given to the resource Barcaza Águila al incorporarse a la Armada, 2 de marzo de 1964 Description An account of the resource Barcaza Águila entrando al puerto de Valparaíso el 2 de marzo de 1964, en su primer viaje para incorporarse a la Armada de Chile. Era la ex USS LST 1092, y su sigla indica que era una barcaza tipo Landing Ship Tank (Buque de desembarco de tanques). Había sido construida en 1945 los astilleros American Bridge Co. de Filadelfia, y adaptada como buque de reparaciones de aviones y helicópteros, participando en las fases finales de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en el frente del Pacífico. Su desplazamiento era de 3.982 toneladas, su velocidad máxima era de 11 nudos, y su armamento constaba de 8 ametralladoras de 40mm. Tras varios períodos en activo y reserva, fue transferida a Chile por un convenio de comodato de préstamo renovable en 1963, y transferida el 23 de agosto dicho año. Luego de su incorporación, en la fecha arriba señalada, su maestranza de aviación fue transferida a la base aeronaval de El Belloto y fue empleada fundamentalmente como transporte. El 10 de abril de 1980, durante un temporal, varó en Valparaíso, frente a la Universidad Federico Santa María, debido a que el eje de la hélice se trabó con una espía, dejándola al garete. Un segundo temporal le causó averías en su casco y la varó más a tierra. Tras más de un mes intensos trabajos, fue reflotada el 17 de mayo y llevada a Talcahuano, siendo dada de baja el 2 de junio de ese mismo año 1980. Fotografía original de la época.
