Title A name given to the resource Petrolero Maipo (2°) en Valparaíso, hacia 1955 Description An account of the resource Vista de popa del petrolero Maipo (3°) fondeado en Valparaíso, donde se aprecia la ausencia de su pieza de artillería popel de 4,7 pulgadas. Constituía clase con su gemelo, el Rancagua (2°). Ambos fueron construidos en los astilleros Armstrong de Newcastle-on-Tyne su desplazamiento era de 8.225 toneladas, su velocidad era de 15 nudos y estaban armadas de dos piezas de 4,7 pulgadas (120mm) y dos ametralladoras. El Maipo entró en servicio en 1930. Tanto esta unidad como su gemelo tuvieron una extensa e intensa hoja de servicios, con misiones tan relevantes para el país como viajes periódicos a buscar petróleo al puerto peruano de Talara, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial e inmediata postguerra, período en que este combustible era especialmente escaso. Entre las otras misiones a destacar del Maipo están el haber servido como buque escuela en los viajes de instrucción de 1936, 1937, 1940 y 1948 y en expediciones antárticas. Además de la mejora en su andar, esta renovación se evidenció en la sustitución de sus dos chimeneas originales de delgados tubos, por una única de tubo más grueso. Del tipo Landing Craft Utility (Embarcación de desembarco Utilitaria), habían sido construidas en los Estados Unidos en 1943, su desplazamiento era de 180 toneladas, su velocidad, de 10 nudos y su armamento, de dos ametralladoras de 20mm. Fueron cedidas en préstamo renovable por el gobierno norteamericano, como parte de un conjunto de 13 barcazas de diverso tipo –incluyendo su gemela, la Bolados (2ª), con el fin que la Armada de Chile pudiese asistir a las localidades que habían sufrido las consecuencias de los terremotos del 21 y 22 de mayo de 1960. Éstas incluyeron el cambio de su sistema propulsor, de calderas por turbinas y carboneras por estanques de petróleo la instalación de bulges o protuberancias de protección antitorpedos en los costados del casco, y modernización del sistema de control de fuego. Además, se recorrió toda su artillería principal y secundaria, y se instalaron dos baterías antiaéreas de dos cañones de 4 pulgadas cada una.
