Desplazaban 350 toneladas, podían dar una velocidad ligeramente inferior a los 30 nudos y su armamento constaba de un cañón de 76mm (12 libras) de tiro rápido, cinco de 57mm (6 libras) y dos tubos lanzatorpedos de 18 pulgadas. Dicho buque fue adquirido en 1879, durante la Guerra del Pacífico, y armado de un cañón Armstrong de 8 pulgadas, de un nuevo tipo, y de 7.000 metros de alcance, excepcional para la época. El Angamos fue destinado principalmente al bloqueo del puerto fortificado peruano del Callao, el que fue objeto de varios bombardeos por parte de la Escuadra chilena. En una de estas acciones, el 9 de diciembre de 1880, dicha pieza se destruyó al efectuar un disparo, debido a que los anillos que afirmaban sus muñones eran demasiado débiles, según se determinó en la investigación ulterior.
