Title A name given to the resource Cadete militar Vicente Merino Jarpa Description An account of the resource Vicente Merino Jarpa con uniforme de cadete militar, hacia 1872. Merino Jarpa (1855-1900), cursó sus estudios en la Escuela Militar y posteriormente pasó a la Escuela Naval embarcada en la corbeta Esmeralda, en 1874. A comienzos de la Guerra del Pacífico estaba embarcado en el blindado Cochrane y participó en la Batalla Naval de Angamos posteriormente, como oficial de la goleta cañonera Covadonga, sobrevivió a su hundimiento por la explosión de un bote cargado con explosivos y sirvió en la cañonera Pilcomayo y la corbeta O’Higgins en las fases finales del conflicto. Entre sus destinos de postguerra destaca asumir como subdirector de la Escuela de Grumetes en 1890, con el grado de Capitán de Corbeta. Al estallar la Guerra Civil de 1891 tomó partido por el bando congresista, destacando su defensa de la Aduana de Iquique, el 19 de febrero. al mando de un destacamento de marinería, contra fuerzas gubernamentales muy superiores. En años posteriores ascendió a Capitán de Fragata y luego Capitán de Navío, con destinos como el mando del acorazado Capitán Prat y la Agregaduría Naval de Chile en Londres.
