Su construcción se enmarcó en el llamado Plan Centenario para renovar la flota, que incluía a seis grandes destructores o conductores de flotilla, encargados en Inglaterra de éstos, sólo el Almirante Lynch y el Almirante Condell alcanzaron a llegar a Chile antes del estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en 1914. Ambas unidades tuvieron una intensa actividad de patrullaje en resguardo de la neutralidad nacional durante la mencionada Guerra, y posteriormente formaron parte activa de la Escuadra. Description An account of the resource Destructor Orella, APD 27 en dique seco Nº2 de la planta de ASMAR en Talcahuano durante su periodo de reparaciones anuales. El destructor escolta Orella fue construido en los astilleros Bravo Corp., Pittsburgh y reconstruido como transporte rápido después de la experiencia de Guadalcanal. Este destructor escolta fue adquirido en Estados Unidos el 15 de agosto de 1966 junto a otros tres de iguales característica, que recibireron los nombres de Serrano, Uribe y Riquelme. Solamente el Serano y el Orella fueron reacondicionados en Estados Unidos y los dos restantes, traidos a remolque a Talcahuano. El Uribe fue remolcado por el escampavía Yelcho y arribó el 11 de enero de 1967 y el Riquelme, remolcado por el patrullero Lutaro, arribo el 21 de enero del mismo año. Estos destructores contaban con un cañon de 5”/38, cuatro ametralladoras de 40mm, seis de 20mm y dos deslizadores para bombas de profundidad. Los destructores escoltas reacondicionados, el Orella y el Serrano, llegaron a Chile el 23 de mayo de 1967. A la derecha se lee Isla Quiriquina, y la fecha en que está tomada esta fotografía es el 19 de agosto de 1917, lo que hace deducir fácilmente que el autor fue con seguridad uno de los marinos del crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden, internado en esta isla recinto naval tras el naufragio de su buque en la isla Juan Fernández, en combate con cruceros británicos, el 14 de marzo de 1915. Se trata de la torpedera Mutilla, tipo Yarrow, adquirida en Inglaterra y ensamblada en los astilleros de la Fundición Lever, Murphy & Co. de Caleta Abarca, Viña del Mar.
