La Guacolda formaba parte de una clase de cuatro lanchas torpederas, siendo sus gemelas la Tegualda, la Fresia y la Quidora, construidas en los astilleros de la Empresa Nacional Bazán en Cádiz, España, en base a un diseño de la firma alemana Lürssen. El contrato por estas unidades fue firmado en 1962 y la Guacolda (PTF-80) fue entregada el 30 de julio de 1965, siendo embarcada a bordo del mercante alemán Stuttgart. Tras su entrega en servicio esta unidad, junto a sus gemelas, integraron la Flotilla de Torpederas, creada en 1967 con base en Puerto Williams, tocándoles una importante labor de resguardo de la soberanía nacional, especialmente en momentos de tensión con Argentina, como durante la crisis del Canal Beagle de 1978. En 1997 dicha flotilla fue disuelta y sus componentes pasaron a ser lanchas de servicios generales (LSG), retirándoseles sus tubos lanzatorpedos. Fue construido en los astilleros Bow McLachlan & Co. de Cowes, Escocia, lanzado al agua en 1929 y constituía clase junto a los Sobenes (1°), Colo Colo (4°), Galvarino (3°) y Cabrales (1°), todos los cuales entraron en servicio en 1931, siendo también denominados remolcadores de alta mar. Desplazaban 760 toneladas, daban una velocidad de 12 nudos y estaban armados con un cañón de 57mm. Su primera misión fue servir de buque ténder de la Escuela Naval, en 1931. Title A name given to the resource Barcaza Grumete Téllez, década de 1950 Description An account of the resource Barcaza LCI Grumete Téllez en un paraje de la zona sur. Formaba parte de una flotilla de diez barcazas adquiridas en 1947 en los Estados Unidos, de las cual seis eran LCI (Landing Craft Infantry, embarcaciones de desembarco de infantería). Habían sido construidas en 1943, tenían un desplazamiento de 385 toneladas, 15 nudos de andar, armadas, al igual que las anteriores, con 4 ametralladoras de 20 mm y con una capacidad para transportar 220 hombres. Además de poder encallar directamente en tierra, estas unidades podían desplegar rampas laterales por donde descendía la infantería. Las gemelas de la Grumete Téllez eran: Cabo Bustos, Grumete Bolados, Eduardo Llanos, Grumete Díaz y Soldado Canave. La Eduardo Llanos fue la única que llegó con radar a Chile. Estas unidades fueron entregadas a Chile el 20 de marzo de 1947 junto a las cuatro barcazas LSM también adquiridas por la Armada en una ceremonia realizada en la base de entrenamiento anfibio norteamericana de Little Creek, Norfolk. Sus tripulaciones, que se familiarizaron rápidamente con estas unidades, habían llegado desde Chile a bordo del buque madre de submarinos Araucano, en el que izó su insignia el capitán de navío Gustavo Carvallo Gundelach, en su calidad de comodoro de la División de Transportes y Barcazas. Esta flotilla arribó a Valparaíso el 10 de junio. En la práctica, estas barcazas fueron utilizadas principalmente en labores de transporte, trabajos hidrográficos y comunicaciones con zonas aisladas, especialmente en las zonas Sur y Austral.
