Ambos eran de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939, siendo sus nombres originales USS Brooklyn y USS Nashville, respectivamente. Ambos tomaron parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y mientras el primero participó en el teatro de operaciones del Mediterráneo, el segundo hizo otro tanto en el frente del Pacífico. Ambos fueron adquiridos por Chile en 1951. El Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente. El O’Higgins fue dado de baja y enajenado en 1991. En segundo plano el Molo de Abrigo. La Fresia fue construida en los astilleros de la Empresa Nacional Bazán en Cádiz, España, en base a un diseño de la firma alemana Lürssen, junto a sus gemelas Guacolda, Tegualda y Quidora. Fue entregada en diciembre de 1965 y arribó a Talcahuano el 25 de enero de 1966, a bordo del mercante alemán Stuttgart. Integró la Flotilla de Torpederas con base en Puerto Williams hasta la disolución de esta fuerza, en 1997, cuando sus componentes pasaron a ser lanchas de servicios generales (LSG). La Fresia fue asignada a la Gobernación Marítima de Valparaíso, dada de baja en 2005 y posteriormente trasladada a Punta Arenas donde fue instalada en calidad de monumento en la Plaza de la Soberanía, en 2007.
