Constituía clase junto a los Sobenes (1°), Colo Colo (4°), Galvarino (3°) y Janequeo (4°), todos los cuales entraron en servicio en 1931, siendo también denominados remolcadores de alta mar. Ex USS Nashville, era de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Nashville entró en servicio en 1938 y tomó parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el frente del Pacífico. Junto con su gemelo el USS Brooklyn, rebautizado O’Higgins, fue adquirido por Chile en 1951. El crucero Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente. Fue construido en los astilleros Mitchell & Co. Ltd., Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Inglaterra, y entró en servicio en 1896, zarpando rumbo a Chile como parte de la Escuadra de buques nuevos al mando del Contralmirante Luis Alberto Goñi. Integró las escuadras activas organizadas para los momentos de crisis con Argentina, en 1898 y 1901 y años después, ya en época de distensión, tomó parte de los festejos del Centenario del país trasandino, haciéndose presente en Buenos Aires, en 1910. En marzo de 1915 se trasladó, junto al Crucero Ministro Zenteno, a Juan Fernández para hacer valer la neutralidad chilena, durante la Guerra Mundial en curso, y recogió a los náufragos del crucero alemán SMS Dresden, hundido en reciente combate. Este buque se había incorporado a la Escuadra Alemana del Asia Oriental (Ostasiengeschwader) del vicealmirante Maximilian Graf von Spee, poco después del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tras la derrota de ésta en la batalla de Malvinas del 8 de diciembre de 1914 frente a una escuadra británica, había buscado refugio en los canales australes chilenos. Su periplo continuó hasta el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, donde este crucero fue sorprendido en Bahía Cumberland, Isla de Más Afuera, por una fuerza británica muy superior, el 14 de marzo de 1915, y tras un corto combate su comandante decidió hundirlo. Tras ello, los sobrevivientes de SMS Dresden fueron llevados por unidades de la Armada de Chile primero a Valparaíso y posteriormente a Isla Quiriquina, donde permanecerían internados el resto de la guerra, en cumplimiento a las leyes de neutralidad. Durante este período, la antigua dotación mantuvo el régimen militar y de trabajo. Imagen que forma parte de un álbum donado al Museo Marítimo Nacional por Cristina Rodríguez Schmidt en 1996.
