Ex Citta de Venezia, ex Spartan, había sido adquirido adquirido por el gobierno del Presidente José Manuel Balmaceda durante la Guerra Civil de 1891, entrando al servicio de la Marina una vez finalizada ésta. Desplazaba 5.975 toneladas y tenía un andar de 15 nudos. Tras décadas de servicios, tuvo un trágico final. La noche del 6 de julio de 1928 navegaba cerca de Corral, llevando a bordo 269 personas entre tripulación y pasajeros, cuando el mal tiempo le provocó una avería en el timón que lo dejó al garete. Su mensaje de auxilio apenas fue escuchado, pero de todas maneras se desplegó una operación de rescate, a cargo de varias unidades de la Escuadra pero el buque se había ido a pique la madrugada del día 7 tras chocar con dos rocas y largas horas de intentos por mantenerlo a flote. Cuando se ordenó su abandono, las olas volcaban los botes salvavidas. Finalmente, perecieron 262 personas, de las cuales sólo aparecieron 83 cadáveres. Según el relato de uno de los siete sobrevivientes, el comandante del Angamos, capitán de corbeta Ismael Suárez, al ver lo irreparable de la situación, se encerró en su camarote y se suicidó. Ésta fue la peor tragedia de la Armada en tiempos de paz en el siglo XX. Fotografía original de la época. Title A name given to the resource Pequeña aldea construida por los ex tripulantes del crucero ligero SMS Dresden de la Marina Imperial alemana en Isla Quiriquina, Talcahuano, durante su internamiento Description An account of the resource Pequeña aldea construida por los ex tripulantes del crucero ligero SMS Dresden de la Marina Imperial alemana (Kaiserliche Marine), en Isla Quiriquina, Talcahuano, durante su internamiento, 1915, vista parcial y criadero de conejos. Este buque se había incorporado a la Escuadra Alemana del Asia Oriental (Ostasiengeschwader) del vicealmirante Maximilian Graf von Spee, poco después del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tras la derrota de ésta en la batalla de Malvinas del 8 de diciembre de 1914 frente a una escuadra británica, había buscado refugio en los canales australes chilenos. Su periplo continuó hasta el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, donde este crucero fue sorprendido en Bahía Cumberland, Isla de Más Afuera, por una fuerza británica muy superior, el 14 de marzo de 1915, y tras un corto combate su comandante decidió hundirlo. Tras ello, los sobrevivientes de SMS Dresden fueron llevados por unidades de la Armada de Chile primero a Valparaíso y posteriormente a Isla Quiriquina, donde permanecerían internados el resto de la guerra, en cumplimiento a las leyes de neutralidad.
