Lanzado al agua el 06 de julio de 1945. Fue transferido a Chile izando la bandera nacional el 20 de diciembre de 1946. Junto al transporte Presidente Errázuriz, fueron de los primeros buques de la Armada de Chile que contaron con radares. Arribó a Valparaí­so el 19 de mayo de 1947. Su moderna concepción en los sistemas de propulsión y calderas y la facilidad con que se efectuaban maniobras marineras, hicieron que se usara como Buque Escuela. Durante 1950 al mando del Capitán de Naví­o Rolando Merino Pinochet integra la Escuadra Nacional. Durante su vida útil, el Pinto cumplió importantes comisiones, transportando Cursos de Guardiamarinas en Cruceros de Instrucción, a tropas de Ejército, transbordados y llevando importantes cargamentos de pertrechos y carga en general.
