Había sido construido en los astilleros de Alberto Daiber y Cía. de Valdivia, y constituía clase con su gemelo, el Vilumilla. Ambos fueron posteriormente rebautizados Brito y Huemul, desplazaban 320 toneladas y su velocidad máxima era de 12 nudos. El Brito naufragó trágicamente el 22 de octubre de 1952 al estrellarse en roqueríos frente al puerto de Quintero, cobrando la vida de 23 de sus tripulantes. Fotografía original de la época. Ex USS Nashville, era de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Nashville entró en servicio en 1938 y tomó parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el frente del Pacífico. Junto con su gemelo el USS Brooklyn, rebautizado O’Higgins, fue adquirido por Chile en 1951. El crucero Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente.
