Title A name given to the resource Vicealmirante Juan José Latorre Description An account of the resource Vicealmirante Juan José Latorre, hacia 1908. Ingresó a la Escuela Naval en 1858, en el llamado “Curso de los Héroes”, y su bautismo de fuego fue en la Guerra contra España de 1865-1866. Siendo capitán de fragata tuvo una destacada actuación durante la Campaña Naval de 1879, primero al mando de la cañonera Magallanes, en acciones como el Combate de Chipana del 12 de abril de dicho año, y el Segundo Combate de Iquique, la noche del 9 al 10 de julio. En septiembre del mismo año se le confió el mando del blindado Almirante Cochrane, con el cual enfrentó exitosamente al monitor o ariete blindado peruano Huáscar en la Batalla Naval de Angamos del 8 de octubre de 1879, logrando su captura. Tras esta decisiva victoria siguió sirviendo durante el resto de la guerra. En 1884 fue ascendido a contraalmirante. En los años posteriores desempeñó importantes cargos, como el de jefe de la Comisión Naval en Francia para estudiar la adquisición de nuevos buques Comandante General de Marina (1887) y ministro de Relaciones Exteriores (1898). En 1908 fue ascendido a vicealmirante. Falleció el 9 de julio de 1912, y en su honor se bautizó como Almirante Latorre a un acorazado entonces en construcción para la Armada en Inglaterra. Title A name given to the resource Patrullero Lientur, década de 1950 Description An account of the resource Patrullero Lientur. De construcción norteamericana, clase Maricopa, era en realidad un remolcador de alta mar, ex USS ATA 177, y fue adquirido junto a otros dos gemelos, bautizados Leucotón (ex USS ATA 200) y Lautaro (ex USS ATA 122). Construidos en de Texas entre 1942 y 1944, desplazaban 830 toneladas salvo el Lautaro, que desplazaba 807, desarrollaban una velocidad de hasta 12.5 nudos, y su armamento era de un cañón de 3 pulgadas y 2 ametralladoras de 20 mm. Sus tripulaciones fueron llevadas a California a bordo de la fragata Iquique, y fueron traspasados a Chile en septiembre de 1947. Tras el correspondiente período de entrenamiento, el pabellón chileno fue izado el 2 de enero de 1948, y la flotilla, al mando del capitán de navío Raúl Carmona Román zarpó del puerto de San Francisco el día 10 la Iquique y los tres patrulleros arribaron a Valparaíso el 12 de febrero. Unidades auxiliares, de modesta figuración, eran sin embargo apreciados por sus condiciones marineras, y prestaron variados y prolongados servicios, sobre todo en la zonas más aisladas. Las aguas sureñas y australes fueron su campo de acción preferencial, a lo que se añadía la Antártica, nueva área de tareas para la Armada para cumplir dichas misiones, estos patrulleros integraron las flotillas de diversas expediciones. Una de sus misiones más delicadas tuvo lugar el 10 de mayo de 1958 cuando, al mando del capitán de corbeta Hugo Alsina, cumplió la orden de retirar el faro colocado por la Armada argentina en el islote Snipe, canal del Beagle, y el día 14 volvió para rescatar el faro chileno que había quedado destruido, procediendo en la mira de los cañones de fragatas argentinas. Finalmente, el 8 de junio, repuso un nuevo faro, siendo protagonista de lo que ya era un serio incidente internacional que, sin embargo, no pasó a mayores. Junto a su gemelo el Condell (2°) formaban parte del llamado Plan Centenario de renovación de la flota, y entraron en servicio en 1914. Desplazaban 1.430 toneladas, tenían un sistema propulsor de cinco turbinas que les permitían alcanzar una velocidad máxima de 31.5 nudos, y su armamento estaba constituido por 6 cañones de 4 pulgadas (102mm), dos ametralladoras y seis tubos lanzatorpedos de 18” (457mm).
